Asked to design and make a bag for a client, Casey chose her cousin who required a bag for university in which she could carry essential items and a daily planner, but could also be converted into a bag for going out in the evening.
After a lot of investigation and decision-making, Casey's final solution was a bag with a removable matching cover which held the the daily planner. This made the daily planner easily accessible and the bag multi functional. There were several compartments and pockets with zipper closures inside the bag, and a mesh cellphone pocket at one end which was transparent so that messages could be read without removing the phone from the bag.
Casey and her cousin were both very pleased with the final outcome because it worked out exactly as planned. Casey said: "It was challenging working out the pattern and sewing in the zips so that they both worked as they were on top of one another. I learnt that if you make a mistake you can always do something to fix it by thinking creatively."
Teacher comment
This was good technological practice because Casey had to have a lot of ongoing consultation with her client to determine and interpret her needs and preferences. She came up with a solution that was original and fitted the need. She developed many skills from pattern-making to planning the production sequence and determining suitable processes.
