Shapeshifting – The art of hand-making surfboards | |
This case study examines the practice of a self-employed designer and maker of fully handcrafted surfboards. A brief history of surfboard-making is followed by an examination of the tools, techniques and processes used in the manufacture of a board, from the extensive initial brief through to finishing and waxing. Issues of mass production vs individual production are also discussed in the contexts of methods, materials, aesthetics, the environment and sustainability, and future viability. |
