Citrus fruit body care products
Tegan Hall & Bridget Gorden
Hamilton Girls' High School
Year 10 Technology, one term
Teacher: Liz Elvidge
Bridget and Tegan were asked to produce a small range of body care products with a common theme, suitably packaged and labelled to give as Christmas presents, and with a brochure promoting the benefits of their product.
Bridget and Tegan investigated existing products and, after consultation with their stakeholder, decided to develop a range of citrus fruit body care products, including bath salts, bath bombs and shower gel.
This was a science-based unit where the girls learnt scientific principles of making body care products, such as emulsification and stabilisation, and about aromatherapy and the effect different fragrances can have on health, such as the stimulating properties of lemon.
In developing their products Tegan and Bridget experimented with ingredients and trialled the results for quality control. They spent a lot of time working on the aesthetic aspect. They considered colour definition and what went well together; experimenting with different layers of colours and trialling variations. They also experimented with different colours and fragrances in the bath bombs.
They worked with the rest of the class as consultants for different groups making products, sharing their expertise to help identify issues and to suggest how to overcome potential problems.
Teacher comment
Bridget and Tegan's planning was outstanding; they were both meticulous in the way they went through the process. Theirs were a range of products that came within the specifications; they looked at each of the specification points and addressed them systematically, because they were just so particular. They worked as a team throughout and interacted very well. They are hard workers who will be given an issue and just run with it, and they're not afraid to take risks.
