Personalised pen

Amy's class was asked to design and make a pen for a chosen client. After deciding plastic was the best material for the task, students explored the working properties of acrylic through task sheets and by making an acrylic key tag.
Amy's client was her father, and she decided to base her design on mathematical symbols because "he likes maths". Amy sketched out her concept, then modelled her design in 3mm MDF to test the ergonomics and aesthetics of the design, and to find out whether or not it would hold an ink cartridge. Amy made and recorded modifications, completed a final design drawing giving overall sizes, and finally constructed her pen.
Teacher comment
This was the first experience in a materials workshop for these students. They enjoyed it and it seemed there was no limit to the solutions they came up with. Amy's solution is particularly innovative and well designed.
