Propolis
This case study is about the extraction, processing, encapsulating, packaging and marketing of propolis and its use as a dietary supplement. The case study includes three distinct companies who all contribute what they do best to efficiently complement each other to contribute to the successful production and marketing of propolis.
Extracts NZ Ltd (formerly called HerbPharm) is a Nelson based company, processing botanicals and other natural materials into innovative, quality products for clients both in New Zealand and internationally. The founding manager's experience in the field led him to anticipate the expanding worldwide demand for herbal medicines and herbal-enhanced functional foods (Conceptual statement).
The company was founded in 1990 and became fully commercial in 1995 when the demand for products so exceeded initial expectations that the business was expanded to provide improved production and laboratory facilities at a Brightwater site near Nelson. This new site provides large volume extraction and processing facilities for medicinal herbs such as Echinacea, St Johns Wort, Valerian and Kava as well as honeybee products such as propolis.
Extracts NZ is a wholly New Zealand owned company, with a vision dedicated to enhancing New Zealand's rapidly growing international reputation as a premium producer of quality, nutraceutical and functional food products. Extracts NZ recognises opportunities in the herb-enhanced nutraceutical and functional foods markets, and in the demand for premium organic products. The company encourages industry partnerships to ensure that New Zealand benefits from the many opportunities that these markets will provide.
Techlink would like to thank Dave McDonald and the experts at Extracts NZ Ltd, Alaron Products Ltd and Comvita New Zealand Ltd for their contributions to this case study.
