Technology Research School

When Fernridge School joined the Technological Literacy research project, all teachers participated in the PLD around the project and syndicates taught a Technology unit based on a shared theme. This case study focuses on a Year 2/3 Games unit and a Year 4 Moving Toys unit.

Focus points – Level 1-2

Characteristics of Technological Outcomes:

Guide students to identify the physical nature of Technological Outcomes. The physical nature of Technological Outcomes refers to its physical attributes. For example; size, shape, colour, smell, texture, components;

Guide students to identify the functional nature of Technological Outcomes. The functional nature of Technological Outcomes refers to its functional attributes. That is, what the outcome or part of the outcome does. For example; provides grip, transports mass, stores, joins surfaces.

  • Indicator: students can identify a technological product and describe relationships between the physical and functional attributes. (This understanding helped inform the Fernridge students' brief development and Outcome Development and Evaluation.

Brief Development:

Guide students to develop a conceptual statement and to identify the attributes an appropriate outcome should have.

  • Indicator: students can describe the outcome they are developing and identify the attributes it should have, taking account of the need or opportunity and the resources available

Outcome Development & Evaluation:

Teachers could support students to undertake outcome development and evaluation by ensuring there is a brief with attributes against which a developed outcome can be evaluated.

  • Indicator: students can investigate a context to communicate potential outcomes; evaluate these against attributes and develop an outcome in keeping with the identified attributes.
Values / Key competencies Additional Material:

In relating to others students had to listen actively, recognise different points of view, negotiate and share ideas.
