Delaney Smith – Fishing Rod Holder
Delaney worked with one of the teachers at school as his client. After a few conversations about product opportunities they decided on a fishing rod holder; intended for someone who needed a product which would allow them to 'fish' in a number of locations and situations, namely from a wharf, beach or rock location rather than carrying multiple products to cover this range of events.
There are currently a number of products available which are suitable for each of these situations, but nothing that has all of them in one.
Delaney chose to use aluminium because it is lighter and offers good resistance to corrosion. This meant learning TIG welding and milling skills, as well as tapping, brazing and plastic coating for some smaller steel components. He says the hardest part was probably sorting out the knuckle joints because of the range of movement required but that the rest was 'pretty straight forward'.
He says he was pleased with the shape and look of the fishing rod holder. When asked about any changes he might make Delaney said he would probably change some parts to make it easier to put on and off the wharf, possibly using a clamp.
"I enjoyed this year, especially that I was actively doing something rather than sitting in the classroom".
Delaney says his stakeholder was 'rapt' with the rod holder and that it performed better than he had expected.
