With their product developed, the students moved on to the creation of a commercial logo and accompanying marketing materials for their games using vector graphic and desktop publishing software.

To give the students examples of the type of media products required for this module, Julie brought in a variety of game boxes, manuals and magazines. Students were also encouraged to carry out their own independent research on the internet.

Developing their logos required the students to master vector graphics programs such as Adobe Illustrator for the production of images that maintained resolution quality at different sizes. The students then had to integrate their logo into a box design, magazine review, or an instruction manual created with desktop publishing software such as Adobe InDesign.

While the technical aspects of correctly transferring images into multiple formats offered challenges for the students, the creative aspects went very smoothly for this last module.

“By the time we got to the Digital Media component the students really knew the ins and outs of their games and really took ownership of it,” says Julie. “And because it was their own game, they really wanted to make something original. One of the requirements for the Digital Media section is to create original content, so that flowed through nicely.”
