Technological Products: Introduction

"When I first started the most difficult thing I had to learn to do was to get a product that was beautiful and creamy and would go right into the skin without feeling oily."

The main focus of the following ideas for Levels 1-3 is on technological products, a component of the Technological Knowledge Strand. However the curriculum is not intended to be one where discrete parcels of knowledge are covered, and teachers will find many aspects can readily fit into other components of the curriculum.

Any of the following ideas could be a focus for a primary unit in Technology. Teachers may find that, as a unit progresses, they may shift focus to others.

Products are designed with a purpose in mind
People use materials to make products because they have certain properties
It is important to know how these properties perform in order to make products which will be 'fit for purpose'
Materials have structural and sensory properties and there are vocabularies which apply to these- conductive/colour...

People can modify these materials. They can form, by cutting, moulding or bending etc, or manipulated or transformed by joining, combining, or finishing.
