There is a quality analysis number allocated to each ingredient, which is laboratory tested to check for microbiological contamination. Ingredients are then weighed to suit the size and proportions of the mix. Mixing is carried out in a stainless steel blending barrel, the lid is clamped on and the mixture blended by a tumbling action. Specialist machinery fills the capsules with the blended powder, appropriate tooling is installed, specific to the product run. The machine efficiently connects the top, to the bottom, filled section of the capsule. The capsules are designed in such a way that the two sections click firmly together when the machine connects them.

Weights of sample, individual capsules are electronically recorded. In production these must be within + or – 5% of the target weight. The actual standard that Alaron Products comply to is the British pharmacopoeia standard that demands that the product is within + or – 7.5% of the target weight. By working to a tighter margin the company ensures that it will produce the product within the standard.

COP Outcome development and evaluation

Each capsule is now visually checked to ensure it is properly sealed and undamaged. They all pass through a polishing machine, which removes any dust and polishes the capsules with a set of brushes. The product is then sealed in double plastic bags and packed in shipping cartons ready for palletising and shipping to Comvita New Zealand where it will be bottled and marketed. Each bag is supplied with a batch number for traceability purposes.

Samples from each completed batch are tested to ensure that they comply with British pharmacopoeia standards. These tests include weight tests, microbiological testing and disintegration tests to ensure that the capsules will dissolve within the specified time.

Quality Certification

The company produces two quality assurance certificates as a guarantee to the customer of the quality of each batch of product:

A Certificate of Analysis that gives the physical attributes of the capsules and the results of the weight, microbiological and disintegration testing.

A Formulation Certificate, which describes the ingredients in the capsules and the capsule shell itself, along with the overall weight of the capsule and its moisture content.
